About the Opportunity

Shoprite is offering an exciting YES: People Apprentice opportunity based in Brackenfell, Cape Town.

The YES Apprentice: HR Technology & People Support is a fixed-term Youth Employment Service programme designed to provide young professionals with practical workplace experience in Human Resources.

Reporting to the People Partner: Technology, the successful apprentice will provide administrative and operational support to the Technology / SRX People Team while gaining exposure to different areas of the HR and people-management function.

The programme provides practical experience in areas such as HR administration, talent acquisition, employee onboarding, employee engagement, learning and development, HR systems, reporting and people operations.

What You Will Do

The successful candidate will assist with:

Recruitment & Talent Acquisition

  • Providing day-to-day recruitment and HR administrative support

  • Assisting with CV screening and candidate sorting

  • Supporting shortlisting processes

  • Scheduling interviews and coordinating candidate communication

  • Sending Microsoft Teams interview invitations

  • Tracking candidate feedback and recruitment progress

  • Maintaining recruitment workflow trackers

  • Updating vacancies, approvals and candidate statuses

  • Monitoring recruitment workflows to ensure requests are processed timeously

  • Coordinating MIE, qualification, reference, criminal, credit, ID and other verification checks

  • Capturing and filing verification results and escalating concerns where necessary

HR Administration & Employee Support

  • Maintaining employee records and people documentation

  • Supporting employee lifecycle administration

  • Preparing reports, presentations and communication materials

  • Assisting with meetings, workshops and employee engagement activities

  • Responding to basic employee and manager queries

  • Escalating HR matters to the appropriate stakeholders

Onboarding & New Starters

  • Assisting with onboarding and induction administration

  • Preparing offer letters, employment contracts and take-on packs

  • Supporting Adobe Sign workflows for contracts and approval documents

  • Tracking signed documentation

  • Ensuring completed employee packs are correctly filed

  • Preparing new starter packs for Payroll

  • Tracking employee number generation

  • Communicating employee numbers to relevant stakeholders

  • Maintaining new starter lists

  • Supporting monthly onboarding communication

  • Ensuring start dates, employee numbers and first-day information are accurate

Learning & Development

  • Supporting learning and development administration

  • Maintaining training records

  • Tracking attendance

  • Assisting with employee engagement initiatives

  • Supporting culture and wellness campaigns

HR Systems, Data & Reporting

  • Updating and validating HR information across systems and platforms

  • Supporting data collection and cleansing

  • Assisting with people reports, metrics and dashboards

  • Supporting SAP-related administration

  • Checking employee numbers and position information

  • Supporting status changes and related documentation

  • Validating HR system information against employee records and trackers

  • Performing data accuracy checks across SAP, ATS, SharePoint and onboarding records

  • Supporting HR technology process improvements and user adoption

Minimum Requirements

Applicants should have:

  • An HR-related Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Degree

  • No previous work experience required

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including:

    • Microsoft Word

    • Microsoft Excel

    • Microsoft PowerPoint

    • Microsoft Outlook

  • Basic ability or interest in Artificial Intelligence prompting

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Good administrative skills

  • Basic reporting and data-management skills

  • Comfort working with technology and computer systems

  • Ability to coordinate interviews and candidate communication

  • Ability to maintain accurate recruitment records and updates
