Job Purpose

The main purpose of the Professional Nurse position is to provide safe, comprehensive and quality nursing care in accordance with the Scope of Practice and relevant professional and clinical standards.

The successful candidate will contribute to a safe patient environment, maintain accurate nursing records, support staff development and ensure that nursing interventions, stock and equipment are appropriately managed.

Key Responsibilities

Quality Nursing Care

  • Deliver safe and comprehensive nursing care to patients.

  • Provide quality nursing interventions in accordance with the Scope of Practice.

  • Work collaboratively with a multi-professional healthcare team.

  • Assess patients and identify appropriate nursing care requirements.

  • Develop and modify nursing care plans where required.

  • Apply scientific nursing principles and processes in daily clinical practice.

  • Follow established nursing procedures and protocols.

Patient Safety and Risk Management

  • Identify, prevent and manage risks to ensure patient safety.

  • Apply appropriate infection prevention and control practices.

  • Identify potential clinical risks and take appropriate corrective action.

  • Ensure that nursing care is delivered in a safe and professional environment.

  • Apply relevant nursing legislation, policies and procedures.

Patient Experience

  • Facilitate a positive patient experience.

  • Create a supportive and conducive environment for patients.

  • Communicate professionally with patients, families and members of the healthcare team.

  • Treat patients with dignity, respect and compassion.

  • Respond appropriately to patient needs and concerns.

Clinical Documentation

  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive records of nursing interventions.

  • Ensure patient records are completed accurately and timeously.

  • Maintain appropriate nursing documentation in accordance with professional requirements.

  • Ensure relevant patient information is communicated effectively to the healthcare team.

Staff Development and Learning

  • Contribute to creating a positive learning environment.

  • Support the development of staff competence.

  • Share relevant clinical knowledge and experience with colleagues.

  • Participate in ongoing learning and professional development activities.

Stock and Equipment

  • Ensure all utilised stock and equipment are accurately charged.

  • Use clinical equipment appropriately and responsibly.

  • Follow relevant procedures for the management and use of medical stock and equipment.

  • Report equipment or stock-related issues as required.

Minimum Education Requirements

Essential

  • Degree or Diploma in General Nursing.

Advantageous

  • Midwifery qualification.

  • Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma in a relevant specialty area.

Experience Requirements

Essential

  • No previous experience is required.

Advantageous

  • 1 year of post-graduate qualification experience before placement in a specialised unit.

Required Skills and Knowledge

The successful candidate should have knowledge and/or competency in:

  • Infection prevention and control.

  • Pharmacology.

  • Scientific nursing principles and processes.

  • Nursing record keeping.

  • Patient assessment.

  • Nursing processes and procedures.

  • Nursing care planning.

  • Relevant nursing legislation.

  • Risk identification and management.

  • Microsoft Office and basic computer literacy.

  • Basic Life Support training.

  • Appropriate advanced life support training for specialised areas, including ACLS, ATLS and PALS, where applicable.
