Job Description
BME, a division of Omnia, is seeking a General Assistant to join its mining operations at Khumani King Mine in the Northern Cape. The successful candidate will assist the Truck Operator and Blaster with the safe collection, transportation, and delivery of blasting products while ensuring compliance with all safety, legal, and operational requirements.
This role is ideal for individuals with experience in a mining or blasting environment who are committed to safety, teamwork, and operational excellence.
Purpose of the Role
The General Assistant will support blasting operations by assisting with the preparation of blast sites, handling blasting accessories, maintaining work areas, and ensuring that all activities are conducted in accordance with statutory, client, and company standards.
Key Responsibilities
Blasting Operations Support
Assist the Mobile Manufacturing Unit (MMU) operator with collecting products from silos and delivering them to blasting sites.
Assist with charging blast holes and replenishing blasting products.
Support the Blaster in preparing blast and charge-up areas according to legal and operational requirements.
Participate in site inspections to identify target blocks and assist with blast planning.
Mark off work areas using approved barricading materials and safety procedures.
Blast Site Preparation
Map blast holes to ensure correct placement according to the blast design.
Measure and verify hole depths to ensure compliance with prescribed specifications.
Identify deviations from blast plans and report issues to relevant personnel.
Communicate with mine staff, contractors, and supervisors to address operational concerns.
Blasting Accessories and Priming
Collect and prepare the correct blasting accessories as instructed by the Blaster.
Position detonators and boosters at designated blast holes.
Assist with priming blast holes under the supervision of the Blaster.
Insert detonators into boosters and prepare primers according to approved procedures.
Ensure all blasting activities are conducted safely and accurately.
Housekeeping and Maintenance
Maintain housekeeping standards around vehicles, refill stations, and work areas.
Assist with the maintenance and cleanliness of operational equipment.
Ensure all work areas remain safe, organized, and compliant with company standards.
Safety and Compliance
Conduct risk assessments and safe work declarations with the Blaster before entering work areas.
Adhere to all statutory, legal, client, and BME safety requirements.
Follow all operational procedures without deviation.
Participate in safety initiatives and maintain a strong safety culture.
General Duties
Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors and management.
Complete all tasks within specified deadlines.
Support operational efficiency and productivity across the site.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
Grade 12 / Matric certificate with Mathematics.
Advantageous Qualifications
Code B or EC Driver’s Licence.
Competent A Certificate.
Blasting Assistant Certificate (MQA).
Experience
Minimum of 1 year experience in a blasting or mining environment.
Minimum of 1 year experience as a Blasting Assistant.
