Job Description

A job opportunity exists for eight Laundry Supervisors (Folders/Ironing) within the Directorate: Facilities Management in the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness.

As a Laundry Supervisor, you will be responsible for supervising the daily operations of the laundry section, ensuring that linen is processed, handled, dispatched and maintained according to applicable policies, hygiene requirements and safety standards.

The role involves supervising staff, monitoring laundry equipment, maintaining effective quality control and ensuring that high standards of cleanliness and linen management are consistently maintained.

Minimum Requirements

  • General Education and Training Certificate (GETC), Grade 9 (Std 7).

  • Appropriate experience in a laundry and linen environment.

  • Good numerical skills.

  • Good communication skills.

  • Knowledge and understanding of laundry and linen policies.

  • Knowledge of hygiene and safety standards.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret the Western Cape Government Linen Management Policy.

  • Ability to maintain accurate laundry data and statistics.

Key Responsibilities

Laundry Operations

  • Supervise and control the daily operations of the laundry section.

  • Supervise laundry processing and maintenance services.

  • Ensure effective quality control and supervision of laundry services.

  • Ensure high standards of cleanliness and proper linen handling.

  • Monitor the overall provision of laundry services.

Linen Management

  • Supervise and record dispatched linen from the linen bank to hospital wards.

  • Ensure effective control and management of linen within the laundry unit.

  • Perform pre-condemning of linen.

  • Report linen-related irregularities to the Line Manager.

  • Ensure linen is handled correctly in accordance with applicable policies and procedures.

Staff Supervision & Development

  • Supervise human resources within the laundry section.

  • Guide and mentor staff on the provision of laundry services.

  • Conduct performance reviews of staff on the Staff Performance system (PERMIS).

  • Assist with in-service training of staff.

  • Monitor staff performance and ensure that duties are carried out effectively.

Equipment & Safety

  • Check and monitor the condition of laundry machine equipment.

  • Supervise and monitor the cleaning of laundry equipment.

  • Ensure equipment cleaning is carried out in line with environmental health and safety standards.

  • Identify and report equipment-related problems and irregularities.

  • Promote safe working practices within the laundry unit.

Infection Control & Waste Management

  • Implement infection-control measures within the laundry unit.

  • Ensure appropriate waste-management practices are followed.

  • Maintain hygiene and safety standards throughout the laundry environment.

  • Promote proper handling of linen to minimise contamination and health risks.

Data & Quality Control

  • Ensure effective control and management of laundry data and statistics.

  • Maintain accurate records relating to laundry operations.

  • Monitor the quality of laundry services.

  • Identify irregularities and take appropriate action or report them to the Line Manager.

Remuneration

The successful candidates will receive a salary of:

R201 093 – R236 877 per annum

The annual salary includes applicable service benefits, including:

  • 13th cheque.

  • Employer contribution to the pension fund.

  • Housing allowance.

  • Medical aid allowance.
