Job Description
A job opportunity exists for six Porters at Tygerberg Hospital in the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness.
As a Porter, you will support the day-to-day operation of the hospital by transporting patients, corpses, blood specimens and hospital equipment between wards, laboratories and other areas of the facility.
The role requires a dependable individual who can work effectively in a healthcare environment, follow safety and infection-control procedures, and provide appropriate support to patients and hospital staff.
Minimum Requirements
Basic numeracy and literacy.
Appropriate experience in a healthcare environment.
Good communication skills.
Ability to adhere to safety standards.
Ability to follow infection-control and cross-contamination prevention procedures.
Inherent Requirements of the Job
The successful candidate must be:
Willing to work shifts, including weekends.
Able to report for duty at 06:30.
Willing to handle and transport bodies (corpses).
Able to handle heavy objects.
Willing to work irregular hours when required.
Able to work effectively in a busy healthcare environment.
Key Responsibilities
Patient & Patient Transfer Support
Transport patients within the hospital.
Assist with loading and unloading patients from ambulances and other vehicles.
Assist with transferring patients to and from beds, trolleys and wheelchairs.
Assist with the safe movement of patients between different areas of the hospital.
Transportation of Corpses
Transport corpses as required.
Handle bodies in accordance with applicable hospital procedures and standards.
Maintain appropriate care, dignity and professionalism when performing these duties.
Blood Specimen Transportation
Transport blood specimens from various wards to the relevant laboratories.
Transport specimens between laboratories and wards as required.
Follow established procedures when handling and transporting specimens.
Assist in maintaining safe and efficient specimen transportation.
Equipment & General Support
Collect and clean wheelchairs.
Collect and clean trolleys.
Collect and clean blood hampers.
Ensure relevant equipment is available when required.
Maintain appropriate standards of cleanliness and infection prevention.
Remuneration
The successful candidate will receive a salary of:
R144 024 – R169 656 per annum
The annual salary includes applicable service benefits, including:
13th cheque.
