Purpose of the Position
The Peer Educator focuses on directly supporting HIV testing services, including community and facility-based testing, as well as the integration of supportive services such as pre- and post-test counselling, offering PrEP and PEP, linkage to treatment, viral load suppression, and re-entry into care.
The role also includes performing minimum required monitoring and evaluation (M&E) activities.
Minimum Requirements
Grade 12 / NCV
Accredited / recognised 10-day HIV counselling certificate
Certified to conduct finger prick testing
Minimum 1 year related experience and/or training
Ability to communicate in English and isiZulu
Driver’s licence would be advantageous
Must reside within the allocated ward/district
Knowledge and experience in a DREAMS or related programme
Experience in data collection and capturing
MS Office proficiency
Clear criminal record
Ability to travel as and when required
Duties and Responsibilities
Conduct mapping, with guidance of the Nurse Clinician and Enrolled Nurse, to identify hotspots and mobilise most at risk populations
Use knowledge of the target community to identify Community-Based Organisations, youth structures, youth ambassadors, and Community Health Workers to support mobilisation
Conduct pre-screening to identify individuals at high risk of HIV and link them to care
Provide community-based support including treatment literacy and PrEP awareness for children, adolescents, and young people
Provide psychosocial support focusing on adherence and disclosure
Continue sensitisation of community-based organisations working with children/adolescents and related stakeholders on linkage and treatment adherence
Support implementation and strategy as the Data Capturer with the team
Capture paper-based forms onto electronic systems
Verify, scan, rename, and upload enrolment and risk forms and service plans
Manage appointments for team/interventionists to submit and discuss data
Report staff capturing issues to Team Leads to ensure data quality and correction
Support health promotion during EPI catch-up and integrated community mobile outreach services
Submit weekly and monthly reports to supervisor
