Role Overview

As a Senior Data Scientist, your core responsibility is to drive Capitec’s AI strategy from the ground up. This includes developing and implementing advanced machine learning models and AI solutions using deep learning, natural language processing (NLP), and reinforcement learning to solve complex business challenges.

You'll be expected to manage the full machine learning lifecycle—from data processing and experimental design to deployment—and provide strategic insights that influence decisions across various departments. The role also involves stakeholder engagement, including with executive management, and mentoring junior team members.

Key Responsibilities

Design and deploy machine learning models in production environments.
Lead AI innovation using advanced data science principles (e.g., NLP, deep learning, reinforcement learning).
Collaborate with cross-functional teams and manage stakeholder expectations.
Manage and optimise full machine learning project lifecycles.
Provide mentorship to junior data scientists.
Maintain code repositories (e.g., GitHub) and ensure collaboration standards are upheld.

Minimum Requirements

At least 6 years of experience in a Senior Data Science role.
Master’s degree or higher in statistics, mathematics, computer science, physics, or a related field.
Hands-on experience deploying AI/ML models in real-world business applications.
Advanced skills in Python or R, and experience working with both relational and non-relational databases.
Proficiency in deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow and PyTorch.
Experience in stakeholder engagement at executive level.
Familiarity with version control tools (Git/GitHub).

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
Exposure to time-series modeling or reinforcement learning.
