Job Description
The General Assistant is responsible for ensuring comprehensive customer service, stock merchandising, shelf price labeling, and maintaining housekeeping standards within a designated area of the store.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Service
- Advise and assist customers with product choices and resolve queries.
- Assist with and resolve customer complaints in a friendly and efficient manner.
Merchandising Standards
- Merchandise bulk stock areas safely and according to the store's layout plan.
- Ensure the area of responsibility is fully stocked and organized according to store layout and planograms.
Housekeeping
- Maintain a clutter-free, safe environment, ensuring customers can enter and leave aisles without difficulty.
- Ensure shelves are properly labeled with the correct prices.
- Complete required checklists for areas like canteens and toilets/showers as per duty schedule.
Safety (OHSA) Compliance
- Adhere to safety standards, including the use of appropriate safety gear and ensuring the safety of customers and staff in the area.
- Ensure stock is safely merchandised to avoid hazards for both customers and staff.
- Report any discrepancies or issues to the store manager.
Manage Stock Loss
- Report any damaged stock to the store manager promptly.
Drive for Results
- Meet set targets and maintain work standards to the required quality.
- Follow through on commitments and deliver best practices consistently.
Problem Solving
- Identify problems and determine the root cause.
- Resolve problems within the area of responsibility or escalate as needed.
Decision Making
- Make decisions within company policies and timelines, considering the consequences.
- Implement decisions in line with the agreed processes.
Planning
- Plan work within the framework of store policies and procedures.
Handle Pressure
- Maintain composure and consistency under pressure, managing time and workload effectively.
Collaboration
- Work cooperatively with colleagues, suppliers, and customers, offering assistance when necessary.
- Effectively manage daily conflicts and resolve them efficiently.
Communication
- Demonstrate courtesy and effectiveness when communicating with others.
- Ensure relevant information is shared with the appropriate stakeholders.
Requirements
- Education: Minimum of Grade 10 (NQF Level 3) or Grade 12 without related work experience.
- Experience: At least 1 year of relevant work experience.
- Language: Ability to communicate in English and the dominant language spoken in the area.
- Identification: Valid South African ID or work permit.
- Skills:
- Ability to perform basic calculations accurately.
- Willingness to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays.
- Ability to work under pressure.
