JOB DESCRIPTION

Tiger Brands is looking for a Bagging & Slicing Operator / Slicer Operator to join its Bakery Production team in Pretoria.

The successful candidate will be responsible for safely and efficiently operating and monitoring bread slicing, bagging, conveyor and packaging equipment.

The role involves ensuring that bakery products are correctly sliced, packed, sealed and coded according to production, quality, food-safety, MECP and occupational health and safety standards.

The successful candidate will also be required to maintain continuous product flow, minimize waste and downtime, and achieve planned production targets.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Slicing & Bagging Operations

  • Operate and monitor bread slicers, baggers, conveyors and related production equipment.

  • Set and adjust equipment to achieve required product specifications and production throughput.

  • Ensure bread is correctly sliced, packed and sealed.

  • Minimize product damage and production waste.

  • Verify that the correct packaging materials and product specifications are being used.

  • Monitor machinery for abnormalities, jams and defects.

  • Report and escalate equipment problems immediately.

Quality, Coding & Food Safety

  • Conduct routine quality checks to ensure products meet required specifications.

  • Verify that batch and date codes are correct, clear, accurate and legible.

  • Identify, isolate and report non-conforming products.

  • Maintain GMP, HACCP, food-safety, hygiene and product-integrity standards.

  • Help prevent contamination and foreign-material risks.

MECP – Clean as You Go

  • Apply the MECP (Clean as You Go) principle throughout the shift.

  • Keep equipment, conveyors, floors and production areas clean and organized.

  • Remove product build-up and waste.

  • Clean spills and product remnants immediately.

  • Follow cleaning schedules and work instructions.

  • Maintain the workstation according to required hygiene standards.

  • Ensure the area is handed over to the next shift in a clean, safe and production-ready condition.

Production & Equipment

  • Achieve planned production targets.

  • Maintain efficient product flow throughout the production process.

  • Minimize downtime, product losses and packaging waste.

  • Complete production and quality records accurately.

  • Perform authorized operator checks and basic machine adjustments.

  • Report equipment faults to the relevant supervisor.

  • Assist Maintenance during breakdowns and planned maintenance when required.

Health & Safety

  • Comply with all workplace safety procedures and PPE requirements.

  • Never bypass or interfere with machine guards or safety devices.

  • Report unsafe conditions, incidents, near misses and equipment defects immediately.

  • Follow applicable lock-out/tag-out procedures.

  • Maintain a safe working environment at all times.

Teamwork & Communication

  • Work effectively with Production, Quality and Maintenance teams.

  • Participate in shift handovers.

  • Communicate production, quality and equipment issues to the relevant team members.

  • Follow reasonable instructions from the Production Supervisor or Team Leader.

  • Support colleagues in maintaining smooth and efficient production operations.

SHIFT, WEEKEND & OVERTIME REQUIREMENTS

The successful candidate must be willing to work according to the approved production roster.

This may include:

  • Day and night shifts.

  • Weekend work.

  • Public holiday work.

  • Overtime when required due to production requirements, operational demands, breakdowns, maintenance or increased production volumes.

All work will be managed in accordance with applicable company policies, employment agreements and South African legislation.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Applicants should have:

  • Grade 12 / Matric or equivalent qualification preferred.

  • Previous bakery, food manufacturing or production experience will be advantageous.

  • Experience operating slicing, bagging or packaging equipment will be advantageous.

  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills.

  • Good communication and teamwork skills.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Good problem-solving abilities.

  • Strong awareness of food safety, quality and hygiene requirements.

  • Understanding of MECP / Clean as You Go principles will be advantageous.

  • Ability and willingness to work shifts, weekends and public holidays.
