Job Description

As a Safety Officer, you will play a critical role in ensuring workplace safety, legal compliance, and the implementation of robust health, safety, and environmental (HSE) systems. This is a hands-on role requiring collaboration across operational teams to identify risks, drive compliance, and promote a strong safety culture.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement systems to ensure legal compliance with all relevant safety, health, and environmental regulations.

  • Maintain and enhance HSE programs in line with OHS Act, COID, NEMA, and other applicable legislation.

  • Organize and deliver safety training programs based on identified needs.

  • Investigate incidents and non-compliances, determine root causes, and support corrective and preventive actions.

  • Oversee contractor safety compliance, including inductions and site adherence.

  • Compile and submit daily, weekly, and monthly HSE reports, including toolbox talks, incident logs, and sustainability updates.

  • Provide coaching and feedback to technical teams on safety practices.

  • Identify, assess, and report actual and potential workplace hazards.

  • Support internal and client audits, ensuring ongoing compliance with internal and external standards (including ISO requirements).

  • Adhere to and enforce the client's permit-to-work systems.

  • Apply knowledge of HEMP and incident investigation protocols.


Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 (Matric)

  • Diploma in Safety Management or equivalent

  • Registered with a professional body (e.g., SAIOSH, SACPCMP)

  • Code B Driver’s License

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a mining or industrial environment


Technical Skills and Competencies

  • Legal compliance assessments

  • Incident investigation

  • SOP training

  • HIRA (Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment)

  • Strata control knowledge

  • Fatigue management

  • COMSOC 1 & 2 certified
