Position Overview:

As a Laboratory Assistant at the Durban Mill, you will play a vital role in supporting the microbiological and chemical analysis of products. You will assist with the preparation of media and chemicals, ensure cleanliness of laboratory equipment, and help maintain accurate records of analytical results. This is a hands-on role that involves performing quality control, preparing retention samples, and conducting sensory evaluations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in preparing media for microbiological analysis and preparing chemicals/solutions for lab use.
  • Clean and wash lab equipment, including test tubes.
  • Transport finished recipe samples to the archive room.
  • Record analytical results of batches released from the analytical lab.
  • Inspect retention samples, noting deviations according to standard procedures.
  • Conduct general cleaning of the incubation room following the master cleaning schedule.
  • Prepare retention samples for fermentation tests and arrange them in the incubation room.
  • Perform ad hoc tasks as required, including sampling water for micro-analysis and taking swabs on equipment and packaging materials.
  • Conduct on-line quality control checks and chemical analyses based on work instructions.
  • Perform sensory evaluations to ensure products meet specification standards.
  • Maintain the housekeeping of the laboratory, ensuring cleanliness and organization.
  • Verify lab equipment and ensure the completion of all relevant records.
  • Perform daily shift handovers, ensuring smooth transitions between shifts.
  • Participate in proficiency testing to ensure the lab meets quality standards.
  • Investigate and react to negative trends or deviations in product quality.
  • Adhere to good laboratory practices (GLP) and comply with legal requirements.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Experience:

    • Minimum of 1 year of experience working in an FMCG environment.
  • Education:

    • Matric qualification is essential.
    • National diploma or degree in food technology is highly preferred.
  • Skills and Competencies:

    • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage and prioritize tasks.
    • Familiarity with laboratory practices, policies, and procedures.
    • Ability to work efficiently, maintain accurate records, and ensure compliance with standards.
    • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team.
    • A customer-focused attitude, satisfying both internal and external stakeholders.
