Job Overview:
The Leading Hand is responsible for producing batches of products within specification and ensuring smooth operations on the plant. This includes managing raw materials, overseeing production and maintenance tasks, and assisting with problem-solving and R&D support.
Key Responsibilities:
Raw Materials & Coordination
-
Verify correct raw materials as per job cards
-
Coordinate with planning and raw materials teams to expedite production
Plant Operations
-
Clean and drain vessels/pipes to prevent contamination
-
Follow SOPs and operating instructions
-
Complete logs and sampling as required
-
Drive forklift and maintain medical fitness for forklift license renewal
-
Maintain production and packaging quality standards
-
Report quality control issues
-
Keep the plant clean and safe
-
Assist with stock takes and other tasks as assigned

Support management with problem-solving and non-conformance reporting
-
Participate in retraining and job observations
Maintenance

Maintain equipment in safe working order
-
Identify and stock critical spares
-
Minimise maintenance costs and downtime
-
Report breakdowns and supervise contractors
-
Coordinate preventative maintenance
Research & Development
-
Assist R&D with trial batches on plants under control
Ad Hoc Tasks
-
Perform miscellaneous tasks as directed by Team Leader
Qualifications & Experience:
-
Matric / Grade 12 (minimum)
-
Diploma or certificate in chemical plant operations (advantageous)
-
Valid forklift driver’s license and medical fitness to drive forklift

Minimum 2 years relevant experience

Basic computer literacy
-
Strong knowledge of production procedures and SHEQ standards

Ability to work independently and in a team
