BIL is currently recruiting for an Automotive Workshop Foreman to join its Rosslyn Automotive facility in Gauteng.

Purpose of the Job

The successful candidate will supervise the daily activities of workshop technicians, ensuring that vehicle repairs, maintenance, diagnostics, and programming are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with manufacturer standards. The role also focuses on maintaining productivity, quality, and effective communication between technicians, management, and clients.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

Workshop Supervision

  • Supervising and coordinating the daily activities of workshop technicians.

  • Allocating work based on technician skills and workload.

  • Monitoring workshop productivity and efficiency.

  • Providing technical guidance and support to technicians.

  • Ensuring repairs are completed within agreed turnaround times.

  • Overseeing the reconditioning of approved used vehicles according to BMW standards.

Technical Support

  • Assisting technicians with complex fault finding and diagnostics.

  • Performing and overseeing advanced vehicle diagnostics.

  • Conducting vehicle programming, coding, and software updates.

  • Ensuring repairs comply with OEM standards and technical bulletins.

  • Escalating complex technical issues when required.

Quality Control

  • Inspecting completed repairs before vehicles are released.

  • Ensuring repairs meet manufacturer quality standards.

  • Reducing repeat repairs and warranty comebacks.

  • Monitoring correct repair procedures at all times.

  • Ensuring proper vehicle storage and handling according to BMW standards.

  • Supporting the successful completion of internal workshop projects.

Team Leadership

  • Coaching and mentoring workshop technicians.

  • Identifying training and development needs.

  • Conducting toolbox talks and technical briefings.

  • Promoting teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.

  • Monitoring key performance indicators, including:

    • Workshop productivity.

    • Technician efficiency.

    • Labour recovery.

    • First-time fix rate.

    • Vehicle turnaround time.

    • Repeat repairs.

    • Customer satisfaction (CSI).

    • Job card accuracy.

    • Warranty compliance.

    • Workshop housekeeping and safety.

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

Applicants must have:

  • Grade 12 (Senior Certificate) or equivalent.

  • Valid Code 08 driver's licence.

  • Qualified Motor Technician (Trade Test).

  • OEM Certification will be an advantage.

  • BMW OEM Technical Training or equivalent manufacturer training will be an added advantage.

Experience

  • At least 5 years' workshop experience.

  • Previous supervisory experience in an automotive workshop.

  • Strong diagnostic and fault-finding experience.

  • Experience using OEM diagnostic equipment.

  • Experience in vehicle handling and quality control.

Skills and Competencies

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills.

  • Technical troubleshooting expertise.

  • Planning and organisational skills.

  • Good administrative skills.

  • Knowledge of mechanical and electrical vehicle systems.

  • Advanced vehicle diagnostics, programming, and coding experience.

  • Understanding of warranty procedures and OEM repair standards.

  • Knowledge of workshop processes and quality management systems.

  • Familiarity with Health, Safety, Environmental (SHE), ISO, and 5S standards.

  • Computer literacy, including Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and workshop management systems.

  • Strong decision-making and quality assurance skills.
