Purpose of the Role

To monitor safety risks during hot work and confined space entries as outlined in the Permit to Work system. The Access Controller ensures safe working conditions are maintained, controls access to hazardous areas, and supports emergency procedures to prevent incidents.

Key Responsibilities

Monitor and control access to confined spaces and hazardous work zones
Sign off in relevant sections of the Permit to Work documentation
Ensure safe work conditions are not compromised (no obstruction, interference, etc.)
Immediately stop work and evacuate personnel if safety is at risk or an emergency alarm sounds
Ensure all confined space entry/exit records are completed and accurate
Lock or barricade confined space access points when not in use
Never leave the work area unless relieved by another trained access controller
Conduct proper handover at shift change, informing the next controller of current site conditions
Return all completed permit documentation to the issuer at task completion or shift end

Minimum Requirements

🎓 Education

Grade 12 / N3 or equivalent

🧠 Experience

At least 3 years’ experience in Tank Farm Safety Standby or similar high-risk work environment

💪 Physical & Personal Requirements

Physically fit to perform access control duties in confined or hazardous spaces
Good verbal communication skills
Strong attention to detail and adherence to procedures
Must remain alert and on-site at all times unless officially relieved
