Purpose of the Role
To maintain, inspect, adjust, and repair manufacturing equipment to ensure continuous improvement in operational efficiency, minimize downtime, and support optimal equipment availability and product quality.
Key Responsibilities
1. Equipment Maintenance and Reliability
-
Conduct preventive and planned maintenance as per schedule
-
Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic systems
-
Perform condition monitoring and raise maintenance notifications
-
Quickly respond to breakdowns to minimize line stoppages
2. Production Line Support
-
Support daily line operations with technical troubleshooting
-
Assist in line start-up, changeovers, and shutdowns
-
Collaborate with operators and controllers to resolve in-line issues
3. Quality Assurance
-
Monitor and adjust equipment for consistent product quality
-
Perform sensor verifications and calibration of CCPs
-
Ensure compliance with GMP, HACCP, and ISO standards
4. Safety and Compliance
-
Conduct risk assessments and adhere to SHEQ protocols
-
Report safety hazards and manage equipment isolations (LOTO)
-
Maintain clean and safe work areas (5S compliance)
5. Continuous Improvement
-
Participate in problem-solving and root cause analysis
-
Recommend improvements based on recurring issues
-
Share knowledge and support skills transfer within the team
6. Reporting and Documentation
-
Complete job cards, checklists, and equipment logs in ERP system
-
Document maintenance history and spare part usage
-
Provide feedback to Team Leader for planning purposes
Minimum Qualifications
-
National Diploma or Trade Test Certificate (NQF Level 4–6) in:
-
Mechanical Fitting, Millwright, Electrical, or Mechatronics
-

Red Seal Trade Test (essential)
-
Pneumatics, Hydraulics, or PLC training (advantageous)
Experience Required
-
2–3 years post-apprenticeship experience in FMCG or bottling
-
Experience with high-speed packaging and automation systems
-
Familiarity with maintenance planning and execution tools
Key Skills and Competencies
-
Mechanical/electrical fault finding and troubleshooting
-
Machine setup, repair, and format changes
-
Basic PLC and SCADA knowledge (advantageous)
-
Strong safety and risk awareness
-
Understanding of GMP, HACCP, and ISO systems
-
Strong reporting and technical documentation skills
-
Teamwork, communication, and effective shift handovers
-
Willingness to work shifts, weekends, and respond to emergencies
