Position Purpose

Assist the Shedman with locomotive shunting to ensure safe, efficient locomotive movement and utilisation within the designated loco area.


Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure locomotives and fuelling areas are clean and safe for shunting.
  • Assist with locomotive preparation, allocation, and delivery to train personnel and maintenance staff.
  • Perform shunting activities under the Shedman’s guidance, following safety and operational rules.
  • Support safety measures for locomotives and equipment in the shed area.
  • Operate hand signals to assist with locomotive placement.
  • Maintain clean workspaces, including locomotives, equipment, and tools.
  • Identify unsafe conditions and ensure all activities follow legislation, policies, and safety procedures.
  • Couple and uncouple locomotives, ensuring airbrakes, jumper cables, and buffers are correctly connected or disconnected.
  • Inspect and refuel locomotives, ensuring diesel engines are fully stocked with fuel and sand.
  • Operate points to guide locomotives, ensuring proper track alignment to prevent derailments.
  • Secure stabled locomotives with handbrakes and wheel scotches.
  • Test auxiliary equipment to ensure full operational readiness.

Minimum Requirements

Grade 10 qualification
OR
6 years’ experience in an operational environment


Functional Training

🔹 Must successfully complete Shed Assistant training (theory and practical).
🔹 Must undergo medical and safety behavioural assessments during the selection process and annually.
